Proficiency testing projects: Testing and profiling of mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) in cacao products

Dear customers,

in collaboration with ECA (European Cacao Association), the DRRR offers three customized proficiency testing (PT) projects for the testing of mineral oil in cacao products.

So far, the inter-laboratory tests about MOH in packaging and food products have focused on quantitative analysis, which was a mandatory step to be able to determine that comparable data can be generated.

In order to align the approach with the requirement of EU Recommendation 2017/84, where it is asked to determine the root cause analysis of contamination by MOH, the next series of inter-laboratory projects aims to introduce profiling steps.
The objective is to “statistically” challenge the ability of laboratory to determine the source of MOH by comparing the profiles with references oils and use of “crude oil based mineral oils” markers and markers migrating from recycled board like di-isopropyl naphthalene (DIPN).
